Planning Canoeing – River Avon – Saltford to Crews Hole, Bristol

How to get there:

● Meet at the club store off Muller Road, Eastville  9.30 am, load and leave by 9.45 am.

● Access point: The Shallows public car park, Saltford OS grid ref: ST (686,674) arrive at 10.30 (drop

a car at  Crews Hole on route) and Crews Hole Road OS grid ref: ST (627,731)

Crews Hole get out: Park the drivers shuttle car in Butlers Close, please park considerately. The get

out on the river is marked by a low wall in the water and mud path up the back opposite an

engineering company (have grass terrace lawns to side), this is on river right just down stream of the

new residential housing of Butlers Close. If you have past the start of the wharf wall of St Annes

residential housing on river left you have gone 30m too far. For loading there is a large rough gravel

lay by on Crews Hole Road located just beyond the the last industrial unit on the left (from Netham

Lock) before Troopers Hill Road (located opposite the engineering factory next to river).

Canoeing Information:

Type of Canoeing:  Placid water - easy river trip.

Grade: 1 Shootable weirs at the Jolly Sailor PH – Saltord and Chequers PH Hanham Bristol.

Portage weirs: Swineford (the one below the Jolly Sailor PH) and at the Lock Keeper PH at Keynsham.

Access: no problems encountered. Alternative access for a approx 6 mile trip, start at the public car park OS

grid ref: ST (658,691) on the A4175 adjacent to the river bridge by the Lock Keeper PH, Keynsham. Leave

cars in the public car park by the boat yard.

Minimum Level of competence: Taster - 1 Star or equivalent experience.

Kit List: Inland touring + packed lunch and water. Facilities: Public toilets and pub.
