We have a very active group of friendly and supportive climbers, with a wide range of
experience levels. We cater for complete beginners and experts alike. Climbing events are
organised and managed in line with NGB guidance and our instructors are NGB qualified.
Our main climbing activities are:
Traditional – where the leader places protection whilst climbing, which is then removed by
the second.
Sport – where the leader clips the rope to fixed protection (bolts) and the second removes
the clips.
Bouldering – usually short climbs with no ropes, where matting protects a fall.
Indoor – similar to sport climbing and bouldering but within a commercial climbing centre.
We run a variety of trips ranging from indoor climbing to sport and trad climbing. Our trips cater for a range of abilities from complete beginners’ climbs through to experienced climbers.

Climbing Programme
In winter our main activity is indoors and is focussed around developing new climbers, while
the more experienced work on maintaining skills, strength and stamina ready for the spring.
We usually run 2 or 3 indoor sessions per week at different venues across the region.
Warmer, dry weather sees us head outdoors and our programme shifts to weekday evening
and weekend sessions at local crags. The transition to outdoors for our newer climbers is
well catered for through our introduction and learn to lead courses.
At least one weekend a month we arrange trips further afield to locations such as the Peak
District, Eryri, Cornwall and the Dorset coast.
Once or twice a year we head overseas, often as part of the Club’s multi-activity trip to the
European Alps, and we usually organise a climbing winter-sun trip to somewhere like Spain.

Beginners
Getting in to climbing with AOAC couldn’t be easier. We have NGB qualified instructors for
both indoor and outdoor activities and run tailored sessions throughout the year.

Equipment
Members can hire harnesses, shoes and belay devices at the indoor centres. For outdoor
events you can borrow a harness, helmet and belay device from the club. Once you’ve got
the climbing bug you will be keen to buy your own equipment and our instructors can give
you guidance on kit options.

Cost
For indoor climbing sessions, you will cover your individual costs direct with the centre. For
outdoor climbing, costs will depend on the event venue and your own travel arrangements.
Car shares are usually possible and encouraged.
The Club makes a charge for formal tuition to cover the costs of training instructors and
purchasing Club equipment. Prices normally work out at 10-20% of the commercial
equivalent, providing a very cost effective way to get into climbing.
