New Members Weekends

Brecons - 21-23 June 2019
There are still places available on this walking weekend staying at the Brecon Forest Farmhouse, located in an idyllic position at the heart of the Brecon Forest, in the peaceful hamlet of Llaneglwys. Close by are the historic market towns of Builth Wells, Brecon and Hay on Wye. You'll find lots of shops offering anything from arts and crafts to local produce and there are plenty of cafes for your mid morning treat and afternoon tea.

The plan is to have an easy/ moderate and a more advanced walk each day (subject to walk leaders). The cost, a bargain £34, will include Friday and Saturday accommodation, a Friday evening meal of pizzas as you arrive, and a group meal on Saturday (possibly a BBQ).

Swanage - 11-13 October 2019
This is probably going to be multi-activity (leader dependent) so, if you fancy walking, MTBing or climbing in the glorious south east of Dorset then this is the weekend for you. Places are now available to buy so book on!

Same format as above but staying at the Chatsworth Center in Swanage not far from the beach and sea.

We may have the added excitement of taking the steam train to Corfe Castle or back (depending on which way we walk it) but I can't confirm times as it looks like this is a special weekend with the Flying Scotsman in steam. WooWoo!!

Cycling News
We are pleased to say we now have a new cycle leader in Russ Curnow. And he has a fabulous ride coming up in June: Dyrham Park to Castle Combe, about 20-25 miles at an easy pace of 10-12mph. It's on the calendar so put it in your diary now.

Also we have new cycling kit available for hire:

  • 3 new phone holders of different types
  • One set of larger panniers
  • One set of smaller panniers.
  • An individual pannier as well

These panniers will fit most normal bike rack frames and are either waterproof or, in the case of the smaller set, have waterproof covers.

The hire costs will be reasonable and due on the site in the near future. Should anyone want to hire before then contact the cycle coordinator by email (Guy).

There is one place on the Cotswold Cycling weekend that's become available. It's sharing with a male so preferably another male will take this place?

This trip is four days of road cycling in the Cotswolds staying in Chipping Norton in a hotel with a gym and pool and full English Breakfast each day.

The weekend will consist of 4 bike rides of around 35 to 60 miles exploring the beautiful Cotswolds and surrounding villages at a pace of 12mph ish.

For those of you that haven't cycled with us before the emphasis is on fun and social camaraderie.

The Wednesday evening road rides will be happening throughout the summer and MTB beginners and improvers sessions and trips are in the pipeline. Keep an eye on the calendar and forum.

Dodecanese Yacht Sailing 1 or 2 week option - 7-21 September 2019
There are still places available on either or both weeks of this fabulous trip.

Starting and ending each week in Rhodes, going around the Dodecanese islands, a diverse group of 12 main islands and numerous small islets nestled along the Turkish coast in the south-eastern Aegean.  The liveliness of Rhodes, where once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World straddled the entrance to the harbour, will soon be left behind by sailing away to enjoy the peaceful, unspoilt and diverse outer islands.  It is with these smaller islands that you'll enjoy their sandy beaches, warm waters, rich history, enchanting character, traditional tavernas, Venetian architecture, Byzantine churches and medieval castles. You'll find traditional fishing ports and quiet waterfront restaurants.  The swimming and snorkeling is superb in many locations.   The winds are likely to be gentle in the mornings rising moderate or fresh in the afternoons, conditions which are handled perfectly by this Beneteau 57 (58 ft sloop).  No previous sailing experience needed but this is the chance to learn to and/or improve helming, navigating, sail trimming, skippering as well as plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, yoga, jogging ashore and generally helping to run a world girdling 58 foot yacht.

We will be with Pete on his 58 ft sloop which we caught up with in the Balearics and Ionian Sea last year following two weekends out of Dartmouth and you are invited to be his guest for a contribution of £433 per week (total of £863 for the trip, deposit £433 payable now to secure your place) which will go towards your breakfasts; lunches with local wine; fuel; mooring and marina fees; customs charges and safety equipment together with any associated expenses.  In addition you will buy your own flights and transfer to/from the boat and holiday insurance (specific requirements will be advised shortly).  All you need are clean, non-marking soles for use on the boat and the agility to scramble on and off a dinghy to go ashore.  The yacht is equipped with all safety equipment that complies or exceeds the mandatory recommended requirements for vessels sailing throughout the Mediterranean and offshore, including ocean crossing; however, it is not operated as a commercial vessel (please contact the organiser if you require further information).

The yacht is stunningly designed and fitted with every conceivable luxury, she has a vast deck area and a breathtaking interior, including a large saloon and 4 en-suite cabins (sleeping 8).  We will be using the three double cabins (7 people on the trip) so it is important that you are either flexible or that when you book you ‘buddy’ up with someone you want to share a cabin/double bed with; however, there is a cabin with bunk beds and saloon space along with an extra sofa in the largest double cabin which offers more flexibility.  There are 3 showers and 4 heads on board.  This is a very comfortable boat and a beautiful area for sailing.  Everyone on board is encouraged to help with sailing and expected to give a hand elsewhere (there is NOT a host/ess included).

Website
We are happy to announce that we have 2 new Web Officers - Rich Wesson and Irene Baker. Welcome to the committee guys and thanks for stepping up to the plate.

Now that we have these guys on board we are taking a good, hard look at our website to see what improvements we can make, and so, to this end, we are looking for a range of members (old and new) to form a focus group to help us.

We need to know what you like about the website and what you don't, what you'd like it to look like and how you'd like to find things, how to make it easier to use and how we can make it more attractive to gain new members.

We'd particularly like some brand new members who have never organised an event to come and test the functionality and usability of the website and give feedback.

If you have strong opinions about the website or just think you could be useful to the Web team please contact them ASAP at [email protected] We'd really appreciate it.

We'd also like some help with marketing the club. We are currently looking at refreshing the logo and will be getting some posters designed in due course. If anyone has any marketing experience and would like to help can they please contact me at http://[email protected] Thank you.

Avon Valley Country Park
We are happy to report that this site is working out very well.  Everyone who has visited has liked it, it has easier access to the water using the slipway, there are toilets for our use and plenty of space. Thanks go to Wendy for organising the use of this site and to Keith for arranging the relocation of the container.

Clare is planning a Monday night social to introduce you all to this fabulous facility with maybe a walk and a bike ride to coincide with the regular kayaking event and finishing with a BBQ? Watch this space!

We will also need a working party to cut back the nettles and clear more of the site for our use. More on this later too.

Part of the deal is that all members of AOAC can get half price tickets to visit Avon Valley Country Park, again more news on how to obtain this discount to follow. How good are we to you?

Did you know?

Organisers - please check that all participants of your event (excluding socials) are members. If however on completing your event on the website, you try to add a participant and find that their name does not show up on the members list, please contact the Membership Officer at [email protected] as they will need to be asked to join.

If you have an event you particularly want me to advertise or you have any interesting news you'd like to share, a story to tell about an event you've participated in, or any more tips that may help club members, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you soon
Cathy x

For activities that are weather dependent, there are often ad hoc events posted on the forum close to the day. It is worth subscribing to these as you will receive an email with the content of the message and a link to the page. Then you won't miss out on that last minute walk/climb/paddle/ride. Also, we have a Facebook page, a Twitter account (@aoacbristol) and an Instagram account (aoacbristol). If you haven't already, join the Facebook group where you will find postings of ad hoc events and photos of past events and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

If you want to know more about how the club works and how the committee makes decisions then please do look at the minutes
