New Members Weekend
Just to say a great big thank you to Kath for organising a fab weekend in Exmoor and to all participants for being such amazing company. I think it's safe to say that all new members on the trip had a great time, were made to feel very welcome, and have said they will all be joining as full members as a result (if they aren't already...well done you lot for taking the leap of faith!!). We even had one fairly new member leading the Sunday walk; thanks Kate, a brilliant walk, well led.

If you are new to the club, a New Member's weekend is a great place to start. Organised with you in mind, there are communal dinners on both evenings, so everyone gets involved, and walks of different levels on both days (leader dependent). Existing members are on hand to talk about the club and its possibilities. And of course, it's very sociable and great fun.

There are still two NMWs left on the calendar for this year:

Brecons - 21-23 June 2019

Swanage - 11-13 October 2019

At least 8 places are reserved for new members, so if you are new and it looks like all places are taken, email Kath so she can release a place for you.

May Bank Holiday Weekends
We are always spoilt over the May bank holidays and this year is no exception:

Mayday Getaway 3-6 May 2019
Due to cancellations there are a few spaces available on this multi-activity weekend to Camelford, North Cornwall. Staying in a lovely house bordering the River Camel, with landscaped gardens, home gym and a hot tub; this is luxury accommodation by AOAC's usual standards. Within walking distance of the town and its many amenities yet only a short distance from the great outdoors for activities including walking, kayaking, surfing and rock climbing.

May Bank Holiday Trip to Pembrokeshire - 24-27 May 2019
Sign up quickly for another fun-packed bank holiday weekend in sunny Wales.  Depending on the availability of leaders, activities will include walking, kayaking, climbing, cycling and lazing on the beach.  Some of these activities will require a certain level of experience and you will need to bring your own equipment or hire it (see the website for more information on AOAC kit hire).

Kayaking: intermediate and advanced trips. There will be sea kayak trips lead by AOAC on all 3 days for both intermediate (lead by Elinor) and advanced (lead by Katie) groups. For both you will need your own equipment so please hire from AOAC if you need to (you will also need to arrange to collect and transport it or arrange a lift share. Intermediates need to be about 3* standard (i.e. have done some trips before, know how to do a deep water rescue). For advanced level you'll need to have 4* skills. Katie and Elinor will decide groups on the day. If any aspiring leaders want an opportunity to lead please get in touch.

Places will be limited to 4 in each group plus an assistant leader who has done 4* training. Contact Elinor to reserve a place.

If you wish to participate in coasteering or sea kayaking for beginners (2 star standard minimum requirement) there will be an additional cost as we will be using external providers. You will need to sign-on for those activities and pay deposits before you go to Wales but forms will be coming out well in advance of the weekend.

In the evening you can walk the one mile in to St David's where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs or walk to the cliff and sit and watch the sun go down.

Killarney National Park, Ireland - multi activity week
There are only a couple of spaces left on this week long trip to Killarney National Park, in the south west of Ireland, in June. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with opportunities to go hill walking and road / mountain biking, amongst other things. Accommodation is in twin rooms in 2 self catering cottages. It'll be fun, and those last 2 spaces won't hang around for much longer. Full details can be found here:

https://aoac.co.uk/content/killarney-national-park-ireland-multi-activity-week

There is a social meeting on Wednesday 1 May at The Boardroom, St Nicholas Street, meeting at 8pm.

This gives an opportunity to discuss what activities people might like to do (e.g. walks, bike rides), and what equipment (e.g. maps) we might need to bring with us.

It'll also be a social event - a good chance for people to meet and catch up. It's been deliberately organised to coincide with the social event for new and existing members (same place, same evening).

Dodecanese Yacht Sailing 1 or 2 week option - 7-21 September 2019
There are still a few places available on this amazing adventure! You can book for either week or for the full two weeks as the journey starts and finishes in Rhodes and will return mid trip to drop off/pick up.

You'll be sailing around the Dodecanese islands, a diverse group of 12 main islands and numerous small islets nestled along the Turkish coast in the south-eastern Aegean.  The liveliness of Rhodes, where once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World straddled the entrance to the harbour, will soon be left behind by sailing away to enjoy the peaceful, unspoilt and diverse outer islands.  It is with these smaller islands that you'll enjoy their sandy beaches, warm waters, rich history, enchanting character, traditional tavernas, Venetian architecture, Byzantine churches and medieval castles. You'll find traditional fishing ports and quiet waterfront restaurants.  The swimming and snorkeling is superb in many locations. The winds are likely to be gentle in the mornings rising moderate or fresh in the afternoons, conditions which are handled perfectly by this Beneteau 57 (58 ft sloop).

You need no previous sailing experience as the yacht's skipper Pete will be on board to gently teach you as much as you want to learn. Equally, if you want to polish up your skippering skills he will give you free reign to do so. Calm, patient and charming, Pete is great company and gets the best out of all on board.

So, what with lovely Pete, glorious weather, amazing sailing, fabulous food, great company, lots of excitement, laughter and fun....what are you waiting for? Book on now!

I should also say it's a bargain price for sailing such a luxury vessel. I did the Ionian trip last year and can thoroughly recommend it, and the members booked on already are absolutely fabulous company, so you'll have an amazing time. Go on, go for it! 😃

Ski Trips 2020

Have you ever wanted to learn to ski?

There's a great opportunity coming up next year.... we're organising a ski trip primarily for beginners and low intermediates, going to Bulgaria to keep the costs down and where the slopes are good for that level. There are only 10 places available and interest is high, however we will be holding a couple of places back for complete beginners or those who've only been once or twice before, with the idea that, after your lessons, we will help and encourage you as best we can. This has got to be the best way to do it!

If you are interested, you will need to contact me  to let me know your level of experience/lack thereof. It's going to be a nice, low-key, social week of skiing/boarding.

This trip will run the same week as the normal ski trip which will be in Les Arcs. Again this has limited places (20) so once it's on the calendar, whatever the plan re selling those places, you need to act quickly to secure yours.

Inventory Check - Thanks
Clare would like to thank all those who came to help last Saturday with the inventory check at Tackley Stores. You'd be surprised just how much equipment we have for hire! Take a look at available kit section on the website under Equipment Hire. You can select items from the drop down categories, if you want to narrow your search. All equipment is available for hire at reasonable prices.

I must at this point confirm that Rob Dawkins is not deputy Equipment Officer, as I reported last newsletter, but is sharing the committee role with Clare.

Action from AGM
I found my notes from the AGM and remembered one item that was discussed: some members would like the list of participants to show on each event. This would enable people to see if anyone they know is booked on and might encourage more takers. Not everyone agrees with this though, so we thought we could put it to a vote. I will email all members shortly with a Google survey for you to express your opinion (although don't hold your breath...I've got to work out how to first lol).

Did you know?

How to get your refund
I've been advised that I may have misled you somewhat last time, the situation being as follows:

When an Event is over the Organiser will receive a reminder to sign off the Event. Part of this process is to list the Members who are entitled to a refund (see https://aoac.co.uk/content/organising-events-financial-management). Signing off will automatically notify the Treasurer that these members require refunding. Therefore, in most cases, you will not need to do anything; the money will be returned to your PayPal account.

If you have not been refunded within four weeks of the Event then please contact the Treasurer.

You only need to follow the procedure laid out before if people are receiving different refunds (due to cancellation at different stages of booking).

Remember though, on most events you will only receive a refund if all places have been taken and your place can be re-sold to another member.

If you have an event you particularly want me to advertise or you have any interesting news you'd like to share, a story to tell about an event you've participated in, or any more tips that may help club members, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you soon
Cathy x

---------------------------------------------------------------

For activities that are weather dependent, there are often ad hoc events posted on the forum close to the day. It is worth subscribing to these as you will receive an email with the content of the message and a link to the page. Then you won't miss out on that last minute walk/climb/paddle/ride. Also, we have a Facebook page, a Twitter account (@aoacbristol) and an Instagram account (aoacbristol). If you haven't already, join the Facebook group where you will find postings of ad hoc events and photos of past events and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

If you want to know more about how the club works and how the committee makes decisions then please do look at the minutes

If you have any issues with the website or email please report these using the direct link in the members section or here: https://tinyurl.com/AOAC- web-issues
