Message from the Chair – October 2021
Hard to believe it is already October…I hope you have all enjoyed some of the many activities that have been on offer.  As we head through the season of colourful leaves and shorter days there are still plenty of different activities to choose from – day trips, residential weekends, as well as evening events including indoor climbing and cycling.

It has been great to have postponed events from last year go ahead too – including the September new members weekend, caravanning in Pembrokeshire and sea kayaking in Sardinia. Sadly Turkey remained on the ‘red’ list for travel so the sailing trip has had to be postponed for another year. Many thanks from all the committee to Esmie for all the hard work she put into negotiations related to this – not an easy task. Really hope it can go ahead in 2022.

Also due to ongoing international travel uncertainty, there will be no Club ski trip in early 2022 but we are hopeful for this to be back on the 2023 calendar.

Thanks as always to everyone who has been involved both directly and indirectly in organising/leading/coaching activities. Also to the committee and their largely unseen work behind the scenes. Particular thanks to Irene, our Web Officer, who has spent many hours liaising with the designer of our new website which is nearly ready to be launched – more details soon!

Hope to meet lots of you on an event soon.  Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or any of the committee if you have any ideas/comments/suggestions about Club-related matters.

Have fun out there.

Why I love AOAC
I joined AOAC in July 2012 and since then I have had a blast!

With the club I have: walked, cycled, mountain biked, white water kayaked, sea kayaked, canoed, climbed, SUP boarded, snowboarded, skied, sailed, coasteered, skinny-dipped, hot-tubbed, wine-tasted, completed a via ferrata, white water rafted, been horse riding, been caving, taken part in club sports days, played rounders on the downs, practised yoga on the back of a yacht, been to beer festivals, socialised, and partied (hard!) (and I’m sure I’ve missed something out!). I’ve been on courses, day trips, nights out, weekends away, week and fortnight trips overseas. I’ve organised (or co-organised) walks, camping weekends, overseas trips, hog roasts, ski trips, socials, fancy-dress parties, the 40th Anniversary Ball and Burns’ Night. I’ve cooked group meals, been the catalyst in the odd romance (as in not many, not odd!), met such wonderful, wonderful people, and have made some truly fabulous friends. On club trips, I’ve stayed in tents, a campervan, bunk houses, lodges, caravans, airbnbs, hotels. I’ve travelled by car, plane, yacht, ferry, and through the tunnel.

I’ve paddled with Fungie the dolphin and partied with the locals in the Dingle Inn on my birthday in Ireland, 2016. I’ve drunk sherry and eaten cheese puffs in Goatchurch cavern whilst singing Christmas carols. I’ve skinny-dipped with the girls on Pedn Vounder naturist beach on a Sennen August Bank Holiday weekend (we went there by mistake, but when in Rome….). On one Pembrokeshire weekend I arranged a birthday surprise for Matt Wheeler, who had organised the trip; that weekend he met the lovely Philippa, and the rest is history (I've got my hat!). Another Pembrokeshire weekend was spent motorcycling with two friends (it was outdoors, and it was an activity!) and I had my van jump started by Thelma’s husband at Porthclais campsite that same weekend (Thelma was very cross I didn't stop to say goodbye but John said don't stop, so I didn't, bless her!). I’ve paddled down the Ardeche and climbed in the Alps. I’ve danced on many a table. Yes, I have so many memories!

And in all honesty my 3 all-time favourite holidays have been with AOAC – sailing in the Ionian Islands in 2018, the Ardeche/Alps trip in 2019 and the Bulgaria ski trip in 2020. Not just because of the activities and the locations, but because of the fabulous groups of people I shared those times with, I couldn't have wished for more lovely people and we had so much fun.

To give something back to this amazing club (apart from organising stuff) I compile and issue the monthly newsletter. Last month I was over the moon as 59.1% of subscribers opened the newsletter….I think that’s a record! Makes it all worth while 😊 Thank you all for reading.

Anyway, after trying all these activities I have realised I'll never be really good at anything, but that's fine; I know my level, and as there's something for every level, there's plenty to keep me happy. So whether you are an absolute beginner or an accomplished athlete, you will find events for you on the club calendar. And if there aren't enough for your liking.... organise something at your level..... you know you'll have takers because there is someone out there just like you! And then we can all join together on the socials where everyone is the same level 🥳😃

So, where was I? Yes, that’s why I love AOAC!

Show this to any friends you feel may benefit from joining AOAC with all it has to offer. They won’t regret it, and remember, the more you put in, the more you get out!

AOAC Climbing – evening sessions
Climbing is an increasingly popular activity in AOAC. It’s a great physical and mental challenge and highly addictive! There’s nothing quite like getting up a challenging route!

Now that the evenings are getting darker our regular climbing sessions have moved indoors to the Redpoint climbing centre. We meet every Tuesday and have climbers of all abilities. We have spaces each week for those who are new to climbing where we get you familiar with the basics. We also have climbers top roping and lead climbing at all levels. It’s a great opportunity to get into climbing or to meet up and climb with others. Everyone is very supportive; it’s a relaxed session and we often stop at the bar for a drink after.

We are hoping to fill Redpoint with AOAC climbers, this week there were 19 of us so we are slowly taking over!

Walking News
A quick reminder that there's a Walk Planning Meeting on the calendar for 21st October at 7.30pm.  Do come along (on Zoom) if you're interested in walking, scrambling, trips or multi-day hikes.

And congratulations to Sarah who has recently gained her Lowland Leader Award and is looking forward to putting some interesting club walks on the calendar.

Cycling News
The recent Cycling Development meeting was held at the Greedy Goose Café at Gatcombe Farm in Flaxburton.

Two Rides, one mountain biking and one road riding, preceded the meeting and left at 10:00am with 12 on the Mountain Bike Ride and 3 on the road ride. This was, unfortunately, one of the busiest weekends of the year for events and people being away so the numbers were dramatically down especially on the road ride. But we still had a great ride  with sun and lovely lanes.

The mountain bikers returned a little later than expected due to it being a great ride and some leaves on the track. The leaves were still attached to the branches and trees making for some significant obstacles.

After excellent food and service from the manager and staff of the Greedy Goose the meeting began.

Items covered and discussed.

  1. More Rides. There is still an appetite for weekday and weekend rides on both disciplines. Leaders will be putting on more rides via the club with advance notice.
  2. Different Rides. 2 new areas will be looked in to for bike events. Bike Packing  and gravel rides. As not many have dedicated gravel bikes the routes will be tailored for MTB bikes as well.
  3. MTB Beginners. Beginners and Improvers events will be put on around Ashton Court and Leigh woods and other venues explored.
  4. Bike maintenance . Bike maintenance sessions will be investigated with outside workshops as well as internal peer to peer training. Basic things as well as more complex.
  5. Caring Sharing. A section of the new website Forum will be for bike swaps, shares and borrows. Many people have bike tools and advice that can be shared so bike maintenance is easier.
  6. Track Event. A trip to the Newport Velodrome will be looked in to and arranged.
  7. New Supplier and Discount. Frame and Form is the replacement for Chaos Cycles that so many members previously used. Based in Tower Lane Anders Bishop has agreed a 10% discount to AOAC members. Other bike shop discounts seem to have lapsed so to have a new one is great.
  8. Club Night. Anders is offering a “club night” visit to allow members to see the facilities, tools, accessories and have virtual races on the static bikes and screens.
  9. British Cycling. Affiliation to British Cycling is coming and this will benefit members.
  10. Club Cycling Kit. The sourcing of dedicated and good quality cycling kit was discussed and it was agreed that once we have enough people interested, and will seriously commit to possible purchases, we will look in to suppliers and designs for riders approval. With enough people prepared to buy we can approach suppliers who offered deals if there is both initial demand and ongoing demand. Jerseys are the start point but from there lots of other accessories can be made available. If you care interested (6-8 MTB and 8 Road already are) you need to contact me on [email protected] soonest.

New Leader Ride.
On Sunday 24th Oct Sue Frost is doing her leader assessment ride and it’s on the calendar! Going to be a nice social ride so get booking.

Routes and Tracks
It is hoped that there will be space on the new website and storage area for the sharing of routes members have done and experienced. GPX TCX FIT files will be logged there with a brief description of the ride and what’s on it. This should help with the “where shall we go?” questions.

16-Hour Outdoor First Aid Course - 20-21 November 2021
This is a 2 day outdoor first aid training aimed at activity leaders, though it's open to all members who would like to improve or refresh their first aid knowledge.

We use the excellent M-Training for this course, so expect lots of practical exercises based around real outdoor sports scenarios.

The venue is expected to be the Charterhouse Outdoor Centre in the Mendips, subject to confirmation from M-Training.

Subsidies are available for this course: existing activity leaders will be able to claim 100% refund of the course fees after passing the course, whilst non-leaders can claim a 50% refund after passing. Please make sure to complete a subsidy application BEFORE attending the event, please refer to the forms at https://aoac.co.uk/content/training-subsidy-application-process.

Now, this trip looks the most amazing.....

Sea kayaking trip to Sardinia18-25 September 2021 or Fifty Shades of Blue
Katie organised and led a trip to Sardinia to taste some sun, pizza and cheap wine to top up the emotional batteries for the dark evenings ahead. Accompanied, by Murray, Steve, Emma  and me, the administrative complications of travelling abroad during Covid were dealt with and we flew out from Bristol to Sardinia.

Sardinia is an Island that is 20% larger than Wales in the Mediterranean to the west of Italy. We were based in Mobile homes on an Island off the NE coast of Sardinia. We were able to paddle out to the many other islands making up the Maddalena archipelago. The weather was sunny, although the wind kept us on land for two days. We paddled across beautifully clear waters with stunning rock formations and small coves where we could stop and cool off with a swim. We were generally paddling for about 6 hours each day and the sea was often choppy. This helped us build up an appetite for home-cooked veggie meals or for eating in local restaurants.

It feels like we packed a lot into the 7 days and we enjoyed the comforts of mobile homes rather than tents.
