AOAC Newsletter

Well, it's 31st January 2021 - another month of lockdown done, another month closer to freedom. And a long month for some....who else has been doing Dry January? 😱  Seriously, it's been easy enough to do with good friends keeping me on the straight and narrow, a shout out to them - thank you xx. And well done to anyone else who completed it  👏 Roll on February, and more so, roll on the end of all this malarkey.

As you are well aware, activities cannot yet resume, so to keep us all engaged and taking part, Irene came up with the brilliant idea of a series of group challenges. Each month there will be at least one new group challenge, maybe a few, that we can all take part in, at whatever level you are. Whether you contribute a lot of miles, or you only go as far as the shops, add your bit to the total to see how quickly we can complete it. Once one challenge is complete, we will add another.

Guy is kicking off the first:

Group Cycling Challenge!! - Cycling Round Britain's Coastline in February - Every mile COUNTS!

During the month of February we have a group challenge to cycle around Britain as a collective group.  This is a distance of 5000 miles and we only have a month to achieve that target.  So every mile you record counts.

So how does it work?

Whenever you go out for a bike ride, road, MTB or virtual, post your distance, and elevation if you know it, as soon as possible in a "Comment" on the Facebook thread (pinned to the top of the club page). This will be totalled up, added to a trusty spreadsheet, then progress posted here to keep you all informed.

Doesn’t matter if you cycle bigger distances or just a couple of miles to the shops. If you want to add additional information on your ride that's great. Photos and commentary, all is good, and fun to see how we are achieving our rides.

It's not a competition but a great way to get out on our bikes and exercise as much as we can through February. If you can't get out, keep an eye on the post to see who is and how we are doing.

It all starts NOW! So who's the first to post?

Covid Considerations:
British Cycling says the following:
Under the new restrictions you are permitted to cycle, and we would encourage you to do so, while following these rules: You should only ride alone, with your household/support bubble or one other person. Stay local, ride within your limits and ensure you are self-sufficient. Leave the house to exercise only once each day. Keep a safe distance from others and practice good respiratory hygiene (i.e., no spitting, use a tissue). You can only leave your home to exercise, and not for the purpose of leisure (such as a picnic or a coffee break).

We know many of you will want to know what is meant by 'staying local'. The Government’s definition of this is stated as ‘your village, town or the part of a city where you live’. We understand that this definition is particularly restrictive for cycling, and we are working to seek further clarification on this. On Thursday 14 January we wrote to the Government alongside British Triathlon and Cycling UK following the continued confusion over this matter, and we hope to provide an update shortly.
For riding in Wales the rules are different and the BC website has details.

Club Online Activities

Potential, New and Existing Members Social Evening - 3 February 2021 - 7.30pm
On the first Wednesday of the month we meet from 7:30pm for a social with current members, newly joined members or people who are considering joining the club - all are welcome.

If you are not yet a member, this is an opportunity to understand how AOAC works along with a short talk about the various activities we run and how to get involved in them. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions. Please come along and join us.

If you are already a member, please join the meeting to add your take on the club, what activities you enjoy, how the club has improved your life, and what you are looking forward to getting back out to do. The more the merrier, and it’s a good chance to catch up.

Pyrénées hut-to-hut 2020 - Zoom Talk - 10 February 2021 - 7.30pm
When Graham and Andy started organising this trip they had no idea a global pandemic was just round the corner.

The talk will reflect on the beauty of the Pyrenees, the friendliness of the people and the challenges of organising a group trip in the time of Covid-19.

If you love the mountains, wonder what a hut-to hut trek is like, or what a 2022 club trek in the Pyrenees might be like then this is the talk for you.

As well as mountains there will be waterfalls, folklore and flowers.

It will last around 40 minutes plus time for questions. Registration details on the calendar.

Evening at the Refuge des Espuguettes, 2027m.

AOAC Branded Clothing

It's been a while since we've had a range of branded clothing, and we have a new logo, so Maria is looking into this. If you have any ideas of what you'd like to buy please email Maria at [email protected]. She will be looking into having clothing with the full logo, but there may also be the option to have a single stand-alone icon of your chosen activity on the back.

Full logo 1

Full logo 2

These are the individual icons we may be able to choose from, isn't that exciting!:

2021 Online AGM
Dates to remember for February:

8th February: Deadline for resolutions by members to be submitted to the Secretary [email protected]

19th February: PowerPoint review to be sent to membership by email and to include resolutions

Once again, in case you missed this:

Chair role
As this is Sarah's third year as Chair, she is unable to stand again. She says:

I think this is a great time for someone else to take on the role. Most things in terms of Covid-19 are now in place and while there will still be issues relating to Covid-19 I think it is also a really exciting time for the Club to try new ways of doing things and a new Chair will be pivotal in this.

What I think the Chair role involves…

  • Chairing meetings: A balance of everyone having a say but trying to finish before everyone loses the will to live
  • Insurance renewal: This only happens once a year and you can pull on expertise within the club to assist
  • Being the face of the club: It’s difficult not to be enthusiastic about the club!
  • Dealing with the unexpected: I can confidently say you never know what is going to come up, but that is part of the joy of the role!
  • Keeping things on track: Making sure more the long-term plans stay on track and you don’t get bogged down with the everyday

I won’t be standing for any committee positions, but I am very happy to support whoever takes on the role as much as they want. If you’d like to find out more or come along to a committee meeting to see what is involved, drop an email to [email protected].

Just for fun:
Dave's Alternative Meanings of Kayaking Terms:

Canoeist - someone able to do owl impressions
Sea kayak - to look for a Tibetan ox
Buoyancy Aid - a fizzy drink made from corks

Can anybody else come up with some alternative meanings of words from their activities? Share them....just for fun!

Hopefully see you on an event in the future. Look out on calendar, forum and Facebook for events x

If you have any interesting news/funny stories/free videos/tales of your favourite trips/tips that may help club members, in fact, anything that might be of interest/entertaining, to brighten up the next newsletter, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

Cathy x
