Another three weeks on....

Connecting people

Whilst official club events have been cancelled many club members have benefited from being able to meet others in smaller numbers for informal activities and this kind of arrangement is better suited to the current regulations. While some members may have contacts to arrange this, others, in particular newer club members, may not. We have therefore decided that it would be useful for members to be able to use the forum and Facebook page to connect with others who are interested in the same activities. Please note this is just to facilitate making contact, any activities you may go on to arrange would not be club activities and not covered by club insurance. Also, the Facebook page includes some people who are not members of the club.

All activities have been cancelled up to 30th June and membership has now been suspended for 4 months. The committee is keeping its beady eye upon current guidance and will continue to update you on a regular basis.

Online AGM

We are planning to hold a version of the AGM virtually as it looks like it could be some time before we are able to hold one in person. Below is an outline of planned dates. We won’t be looking at resolutions as we feel this would be difficult to discuss without a meeting but we will provide reports and an opportunity to elect the committee and for discussions.

1st July - An email will be sent to all members which will include

  • A PowerPoint presentation to include reports but no resolutions
  • Details of a zoom meeting where there will be an opportunity to discuss the presentation and ask questions (9th July)
  • A list of nominees that have been proposed and seconded for committee posts and details on how to vote

9th July – Zoom meeting open to all members to discuss the presentation, ask questions of the committee, and ask questions of those nominated.

31st July – Deadline for voting for committee posts

To be nominated for a position on the committee, each nominee must have been proposed by an AOAC member and seconded by another member.

Please forward nominations for any committee role to the Club Secretary ([email protected]) by 30th June. The committee positions are Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Officer, Activity Officer, Equipment Officer, Development Officer, Communications Officer, Website Officer. Further details on roles can be found in the club rules or by speaking to current committee members.

Online Events

Carnage with occasional kayak surfing - 7.30pm Wednesday 17 June 2020
Description: A video edit of the “highlights” of 4 days of kayak surfing from the 2019 trip to Sennen, by Sarah. For those who have seen edits from previous trips this one has the usual carnage and more. The video is 13 minutes long including numerous shots from under the water.
Genre: Comedy with occasional action

We are limiting numbers to 20, if more people are interested, we'll schedule more shows! Details and how to join are on the AOAC Calendar.

Talk on trekking & adventures in Patagonia (and the Alps if time permits!) - 2nd showing
Graham is going to repeat his talk about two of his adventures from 2017: a solo trip to Patagonia and (if time) the Walker's Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt which he did with fellow AOAC member Andy.

In Patagonia he trekked in both Chile (Torres del Paine) and Argentina (around Monte Fitz Roy and near Bariloche). Expect to see mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and waterfalls*!
(* waterfalls not actually in Patagonia but not to be missed if visiting Argentina)

Keep your eye on Facebook and the calendar to see when the next showing will be. Again numbers will be limited to 20.

Quiz Night - Wednesday 20 May 2020
Julie arranged a Zoom quiz which entertained a full house. It was great fun. Is there anyone else out there who fancies arranging another?

Sennen - August Bank Holiday Weekend 2020
Whilst the campsites are not yet open we're hoping they will in time for the August Bank Holiday weekend so we can get back down to Sennen. Andy has reserved a number of places on a different campsite near St Just where we can just rock up without paying a deposit. Fingers crossed.

Ski Trips 2021
Sadly, due to the uncertain times, we are currently not planning any club ski trips for next year, as this may place too much risk on the club. However this may change depending on developments and somebody being willing to organise. Hopefully, if club trips don't go ahead, you will be able to organise your own trips. And even more hopefully, we will have two trips on the calendar again in 2022. Nearer the time we will be looking for an organiser for the main trip.... if you're interested we'd love your help.

If you have any interesting news/funny stories/free videos/tales of your favourite trips/tips that may help club members, in fact, anything that might be of interest/entertaining, to brighten up the next newsletter, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you sometime in the future :)

Stay safe and stay well
