AOAC Newsletter
Short one this week and no newsletter for a few weeks as I'm off on my hols again :D
Now, we covered trips last week (and we do have some fabulous ones on the calendar) but there are some other events that look very interesting.....
Bath Skyline - the highlights - Tuesday 30 July
A lovely 4 mile walk along the canal and then up to the Skyline, for great views. Starts at 7pm and lasts about 2 hours.
Open social for potential, new and existing members - Wednesday 7 August
Meeting at 7.30pm at The Boardroom in St Nicholas Street BS1; this is a chance for people to come along and find out about the club and is always better when some existing members are there to add their passion and interests to the discussion. You are required particularly this month as Kath and other regular attendees are away on the club trip to France, so please come along and support Irene and Rob who are standing in. Thank you x.
Fforest Fawr, Brecon Beacons National Park - Sunday 11 August
A grade D strenuous (3 boot+) 11 miles circular walk on the largely pathless terrain of the eastern Fforest Fawr hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park. A generally quiet area with good views over the Brecons and surrounding area. Not suitable for beginners, but any capable, well equipped walker should be fine.
Please text Martin if you are joining him and use the forum to arrange lift shares. If the weather forecast is very wet this event may be cancelled, so keep your eye on the forum.

Barbecue, Road ride/Walk, Social - Sunday 18 August
Join Kev & Carol for a road cycle or walk followed by a barbecue or just come along for the barbecue (bring your own food). The BBQ will be set up around 1pm. Walk and cycling details will follow....keep your eyes on the calendar/forum/Facebook.
There was a great turnout for this event last August.... can we beat the number this year?

Navigation Event/Walk - Map Reading - Sunday 1 September
A half day navigation familiarisation event, combined with a short walk of around 5 miles, focusing on basic map reading skills.
The aim is to provide those with no or little navigation experience the chance to learn or refresh some basic map reading skills. This will be a ‘hands on’ map reading morning where you will, along with others, guide yourself around an approximate 5 miles of the footpaths and bridleways near Dyrham. This might start to give you the confidence to lead walks with family, friends or perhaps for the club in the future.
Please text Martin if you are coming so he will have some idea of numbers for maps etc.

Extra Tips for Organising a Day or Evening Event
We are always grateful to anyone who puts on an event and we want all events to run well, so to this end, please find below some advice for attendees and organisers to help ensure a smooth start to day and evening events:
Attendees
- Arrive in good time for an event.
- Let the organiser know that you plan to attend and pass on a contact number so that they can get in touch in case you don’t arrive.
- If you have trouble finding the group ring the organiser for more precise location details.
Organising and leading day trips and evening events
- State what time to meet and when you’ll be leaving.
- Request phone numbers from attendees so you can contact them if they do not arrive at the meeting point.
- Try to make your meeting points as specific as possible. This is especially useful for new members who won’t recognise members of the group.
Most importantly, have fun!
A trip I didn't mention last week.....
Worcestershire Avon Aquatic Ambulation - 27-28 September 2019
What better way to spend the weekend than messing about on the river. Hoping to see lots of wildlife whilst enjoying the peace and tranquility of a river paddle.
Join Andy on this canoe or kayak touring trip of approximately 35 miles along the Worcestershire Avon from Stratford to Eckington.
No prerequisite for the paddling in open canoes but kayakers will need to be of a minimum 1*/Discovery standard.
We'll be camping at the Fish and Anchor on Friday and Saturday nights, where Andy has booked us in for dinner on the Saturday night.

If you have an event you particularly want me to advertise or you have any interesting news you'd like to share, a story to tell about an event you've participated in, or any more tips that may help club members, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.
See you soon
Cathy x

For activities that are weather dependent, there are often ad hoc events posted on the forum close to the day. It is worth subscribing to these as you will receive an email with the content of the message and a link to the page. Then you won't miss out on that last minute walk/climb/paddle/ride. Also, we have a Facebook page, a Twitter account (@aoacbristol) and an Instagram account (aoacbristol). If you haven't already, join the Facebook group where you will find postings of ad hoc events and photos of past events and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
If you want to know more about how the club works and how the committee makes decisions then please do look at the minutes.
If you have any issues with the website or email please report these using the direct link in the members section or here: https://tinyurl.com/AOAC- web-issues
