Merry Christmas!
I'd like to wish you all a fabulous Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year. Whatever you are doing, enjoy New Year's Eve and make 'doing more with AOAC' one of your resolutions. There are so many trips and events on the calendar already, with many more to follow; you are spoilt for choice :)

Have a great time at Blencathra guys; enjoy the fabulous celebration dinner and spending NYE with great people.

New Year - Wednesday 9 January 2019
The AOAC new year starts with an Open Social/New Members Night/Ski & Board Trip 2020 Planning Meeting upstairs at The Boardroom, St Nicholas Street.

Come along if you are:
A new or potential member who wants to find out what the club is all about (meet at 7.30pm)
Kath will be there to welcome you and give you all the gen on AOAC activities, the calendar and how to get the best out of the club.
An existing member who fancies a post-Christmas social (8.00pm)
We are getting more and more members turning up for a catch up and to encourage the potential members to join; come along.
A skier/snowboarder who would like to influence the 2020 trip (8.00pm)
We have organised a snowsports trip for many years. Are we choosing the right resorts? The best week of the season? The right sort of accommodation? Would you prefer a cheaper trip or do you prefer a bit more comfort? Come long and have your say on the trip you'd like to see on the calendar in 2020.

Baskerville - 8-10 February 2019

Martin is again organising a treat of a weekend in Hay-on-Wye. The old Baskerville Hall has been updated and now boasts a very efficient Bio-mass central heating system which has improved the place no end. Gone are the damp and drafty bunkrooms; toasty rooms await us now. And if you feel the need for a bit more space, there are plenty of rooms to upgrade to (at extra cost, obvs). Please contact Martin for further details.

There are many opportunities in the area for walking, kayaking, cycling and mountain biking.

The price of £78 includes full cooked English breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday and a fabulous 3-course meal on the Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed the food last year and had a great weekend.

And as last year's Saturday night quiz was a great success we thought we would bring something different to this weekend - we are hosting a Murder Mystery - Murder at the Hall! This won't be obligatory but we hope some of you will want to join in. There are 20 characters, so the first 20 people to express an interest will be allocated one of these, the rest will be given other roles to play. It will take place throughout dinner, but there will still be time to chat and catch up on the day's activities. Come dressed in character for even more fun!

Places are available now. Book quickly to secure your place.

North Wales Multi-Activity Trip - 22-24 March 2019
There is a place available on this weekend in Cefn Birth (near Bala), staying in a bunkhouse with a full English Breakfast on both days, eating in a pub on the Saturday night. Plenty of opportunities for of kayaking, walking and mountain biking. Should be a great weekend.

Mountain Biking:

Shaun will be leading a more advanced group one day with some distance, cross country. There's lots of very good trail options locally. Pete will also be leading.

Walking:

There are some great locations nearby for walking.

Kayaking:

There are many great rivers nearby. This trip is suitable for for all levels although the minimum is 2 star standard (you don't need the qualification) with some safety training (eg the clubs MWSS or WWSRT).

News
Esmie has recently stepped up to become the Sailing Co-ordinator. We'd like to thank Deb for all her help with this activity, and look forward to supporting Esmie as she puts more sailing events on the calendar. If you are interested in sailing please contact Esmie at [email protected]

There are places available on both the sailing trips that are currently on the calendar; one week around the Cyclades in June and a two-week trip around the Dodecanese Islands in September (you can book just one of the weeks if you don't want to go for the full two). Hopefully there will be some shorter trips in this country to look forward to too. No experience is needed on any of these trips but you will get a chance to try many aspects of sailing....get me helming the boat below haha! (Not at all tense 😂).

Contributors Party
If you have received your invitation to this fabulous party please reply to your email to let Wendy know whether you can make it or not.

If you want to receive an invitation next year all you have to do is make a contribution to the club; arrange an event, do some coaching, assist with kit transport, join the committee etc. There are plenty of ways to get involved; after all, the club is run by its members for its members and every little helps. This party is a big 'Thank You' to everyone who has done their bit and kept the club going for another year. Well done guys!

Did You Know
If you want to know when your membership ends, go to 'My Account' on the top bar and your 'Membership Expiry Date' is shown there. If you try to book an event past that date you will be prompted to re-join before you can book.

If you have an event you particularly want me to advertise or you have any interesting news you'd like to share, a story to tell about an event you've participated in, or any more tips that may help club members, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you soon
Cathy x

For activities that are weather dependent, there are often ad hoc events posted on the forum close to the day. It is worth subscribing to these as you will receive an email with the content of the message and a link to the page. Then you won't miss out on that last minute walk/climb/paddle/ride. Also, we have a Facebook page, a Twitter account (@aoacbristol) and an Instagram account (aoacbristol). If you haven't already, join the Facebook group where you will find postings of ad hoc events and photos of past events and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

If you want to know more about how the club works and how the committee makes decisions then please do look at the minutes

If you have any issues with the website or email please report these using the direct link in the members section or here: https://tinyurl.com/AOAC- web-issues
