Covid Update
We continue to monitor the relevant Covid regulations to ensure that we are complying and to keep events as safe as we can. We have been able to increase the numbers on some events as we are exempt from the rule of 6. This is because we run organised club events which are Covid-19 risk assessed and in line with National Governing Body guidelines. Since our last message to members a week ago there have been further updates to these and there are likely to be many more over the coming months. The latest is clarification on events of over 6. Below is what we have now added to our risk assessments/SOP

Where event numbers exceed 6, groups of more than 6 can only mix whilst participating in the activity itself.  The organiser/leader must ensure that before the event, after the event and during any breaks or lunch stops, participants cannot mix in numbers greater than 6.

While events continue to be very different and limited we do have some positive news! We have a First Aid course coming up which is 100% subsidised for leaders. Thanks to Guy Thomas and Steve Hobbs for making this happen. We are also developing Stand Up Paddle boarding which will be a great new addition to our current activities, thanks Irene Baker for leading on this.

Many thanks to everyone who has enabled activities to happen. Please continue organising events as we move in to the autumn and winter

New Members Zoom Meeting - Wednesday 7th October - 7.30pm
Kath would be grateful if some of us would join her on this zoom call on Wednesday, to give help and encouragement to any potential or new members of the club.

Here is the link to the meeting:

AOAC Friend Groups
I have the most amazing friends (love you guys xx). And where did I meet most of them? AOAC of course!

AOAC is the perfect place to meet people who enjoy similar activities to you. Maybe you form Whatsapp groups to arrange ad hoc events; a great way to get companions for all your adventures, and that's fabulous, but, here's where I ask you a question....remember how you met these guys? I bet you met most of them through AOAC. Now if we keep all these events private new members don't get the benefit of joining you or indeed, if no events are put on the calendar, of going on any activities. Could you please consider putting some cycle rides, MTB rides, walks etc. on the calendar so other members can benefit from making great friends too? Pretty please.Thank you x.

First Aid Course - 14/15 November 2020
We are looking for people who would like to do a first aid course and are available over the weekend of the 14th and 15th November. We have a few signed up already but need more people onboard so we can definitely book a course.

If you are interested, please contact Guy as a matter of urgency at [email protected]

what3words
Many of you will have heard of what3words but some may not yet know how brilliant this app is.

what3words has divided the globe into 3m squares and given each one a unique 3 word address. It means everywhere can be located with just three words. For example ///kite.chats.dine will take you to a precise spot in a field next to the River Ouse in York. what3words is available as a free app for iOS and Android and online map at map.what3words.com.

To find you more easily in an emergency, many UK Emergency Services are encouraging you to share your 3 word address.

How do I use what3words in an emergency?

  1. Find the 3 word address for your current location on the free what3words app for iOS and Android. It works offline – ideal for areas with unreliable data connection.
  2. Share your 3 word address over the phone to the call handler.
  3. The emergency service can then coordinate a response directly to the exact location where help is needed.

We have actually used this recently when one of our party got left behind (a good reason to allocate a leader even on a private trip....a simple head count would have negated the need to use what3words!). Anyway, there we were in the middle of nowhere with no signal and someone missing. The 3 word location was noted and after reaching higher ground a quick text was sent giving the 3 word location. Navigation by said missing person to that location meant we were soon reunited to continue our adventures together.

SUP Boarding
You may have seen our recent Facebook post about the Club starting Stand Up Paddleboarding as a new activity.  There has been a lot of positive feedback and we are well underway with the organisation and resourcing kit etc.  We are now looking for 4 members who would like to become coaches.  There will be a 100% training subsidy provided for this meaning you would pay for the courses leading to SUP Instructor certification and after using this skill coaching 10 events within the Club you will receive a full refund for all fees charged.  This includes First Aid certification, SUP Safety and Rescue and Foundation SUP Instructor course.  If you would like to apply for this subsidy please email [email protected] saying why you would like to do this.  We are particularly interested in applications from some of our newer members.

Committee
So I've introduced our new committee members. Now, just in case you haven't met the rest of the committee, here are a few more:

Membership Officer - Kath

I have been a member of AOAC for over 10 years and have gained many friends for life. I have been a committee member for a large proportion of my time in the club as equipment officer and membership officer twice.

I like to hike and mountain bike as well as spend time away with friends in my Motorhome. I have recently got a rescue puppy called Spera who is now enjoying the outdoor life with me.

Development Officer - Guy

Cycling is part of my life and much of it on the road. When not on the road the trail centres and cross country routes is where you will find me.

I’ve been Cycling Coordinator for the club for a number of years and enjoy helping others into the activity and promoting events to get members out there soaking up the countryside.

In my third year as Development Officer I’ve been involved in the development of all the other activities and am pleased to see the club widen, deepen and introduce activities throughout.

Communications Officer - Cathy (me!)

Cathy has made the newsletters her own and manages to make reading the latest club news an enjoyable experience! Cathy has been our enthusiastic Communications Officer for four years now and a club member for eight. Cathy puts the social into all events she takes part in and is a firm believer that the apres ski is the most important part of any ski trip. Cathy enjoys taking part in a wide variety of club events and has tried her hand at all of our activities. She especially enjoys multi-day trips and is always found at a club social! (Written by Sarah  she knows me well! (although I do now quite like snowboarding))

Hopefully see you on an event soon. Look out on calendar, forum and Facebook for future events x

If you have any interesting news/funny stories/free videos/tales of your favourite trips/tips that may help club members, in fact, anything that might be of interest/entertaining, to brighten up the next newsletter, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

Stay safe and stay well

Cathy x
