AOAC Newsletter

Almost back to normal eh?! It's been great to get out and about on various events, slightly strange to have such small groups but lovely all the same. Will be even better when we can get away on club weekend trips again but hey, they'll be back in time.

Thanks to everyone who has put events on the calendar; an abundance of walks, cycle rides, climbs and kayaking to savour.

Carrie Spittlehouse has just added a lovely cycle ride to the calendar and Julie Coombe a fabulous walk. Other events are waiting to be snapped up, keep your eye on the calendar for more (there is a glitch with the calendar at the mo that seems to be duplicating events - we hope to get this sorted soon).

If anyone else wants to organise an event, please feel free to propose something; let's get more people out and connecting again. You don't have to be a qualified leader to propose an event just find one who will lead it for you.

How to propose an event at this time:

Before you propose anything:

  • Consider that currently we can only have groups of 6 on any activity and only day trips with no shuttles or car shares. No overnight stays are permitted under the current club guidelines.
  • If there is an event on the date you are proposing, as long as the venue/start place is different, there's a good chance your event will be approved for the same date (previously this may be considered a clash and therefore may not have been approved).
  • Please read the club guidance (SOP)/Risk Assessments regarding Covid-19 (to be found at the top of the Home page) and speak to the Activities Officer (AO) if you have any queries
  • (These restrictions will be reviewed at every committee meeting starting with this month's on the 17th).
  • Check the ‘Financial Management for Events’ on menu. (Ignore if no costs are involved).
  • Ensure you have an Approved Leader on board if required – you can have the event open to these members for payment first to ensure they are able to book their place.  Contact AO for help.
  • Complete the Event Proposal Form (‘Propose an Event’). Please keep the 'Places available from' date set for a week before the events; this gives people a chance to book on, as places are limited.
  • Wait to hear from Activities Officer by either:
    • Email confirming your event is approved
    • Email/phone call to discuss any issues
  • When you have AO approval – book!

 After you've booked the event:

  • Your event will appear on the calendar.
  • You complete a Payment Request Form to arrange payment of any expenses. Receipts/Invoices can be photographed to upload as a file. However, the file size is limited to 2 MB, alternatively attach to an email to [email protected].
  • Market the event – use the Forum and Facebook to advertise (NB no specific details on Facebook please).
  • To make changes to the event go to ‘Events to complete’ where you can edit the proposal form.

  After the event:

  • Complete the event - go to ‘Events to complete’ and sign off.

Thanking you all in advance.

New Committee Members
We welcome our new committee members:

Maria Hendricks - Secretary

Adorable Maria has been a member for just over a year but loves the club (and her friends, who may or may not have coerced her) so much she has taken on the role of Secretary. Maria likes walking, camping, weekends away and skiing. She fabulously joined us on the memorable Beginners/Low Intermediates ski/snowboard trip to Bulgaria earlier this year. Maria is great fun and will be a very efficient secretary.

Pete Ryecroft - Activities Officer

Gorgeous Pete has been a member for many years and has now been roped into being Activities Officer. Pete also likes walking, camping, weekends away and....snowboarding! Another delightful member of the ski/snowboard trip to Bulgaria; my main mucker on the trip, indeed. A great support in general, if you need any help, he's your man. Please do not hesitate to contact him with any queries regarding your event proposals.

Clinton Lee Jones - Equipment Officer

Awesome Lee joined around the same time as Maria and has also stepped up eagerly to a role on the Committee, that of Equipment Officer. Lee is mainly interested in kayaking and slowly building up his skills so he doesn't capsize so much! He is a welcome member of the team. Thanks again for volunteering Lee.

Club Membership - Kath James
Since the start of August we have resumed the potential and new members evenings but unfortunately we can’t meet up in person yet. Currently we are running the sessions via zoom on the first Wednesday of each month.

We have held 2 sessions so far and have had 5 individuals who expressed an interest in joining the club. Up until today only 1 of those individuals has joined the club. I would like to improve my success rate from these sessions above 20%.

Currently it is just me as Membership Officer on the call but it would be good to have some current members who can share their experiences of the club with the potential members rather than them just listening to myself. If anybody has any suggestions on how to improve the new members evenings, whether it is now or in the future when we can return to face to face sessions, please get in touch with me at [email protected].

Kath

Please can some of us join Kath on the Zoom meeting, it's not like you've had enough of them.....thank you.

British Canoe Membership
It has been great to see a number of our members purchasing their own SUP’s, kayaks or canoes during lockdown.   If you haven’t done so already, I would absolutely recommend taking out BC (British Canoe) membership.  ‘On the Water’ membership not only gives you a licence to paddle 4,500 km of English waterways, this being a legal requirement on some waterways and individual insurance but also the opportunity to insure up to 2 craft up to the value of £2,000 and £250 for a paddle.  This insurance covers theft and accidental damage and can only be taken out when joining or renewing your membership.  Current cost is £45 per year on top of your membership fee but provides complete peace of mind.  BC members also have access to a number of discounts, a regular newsletter and the opportunity to purchase The Paddler and SUP magazines at a discounted price.  BC members also have access to a Paddlers Portal and resources through their website.  Please see https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/membership for further details and to find out more about the work BC are doing to help improve access to waterways for paddlers.

Hopefully see you on an event soon. Look out on calendar, forum and Facebook for future events x
If you have any interesting news/funny stories/free videos/tales of your favourite trips/tips that may help club members, in fact, anything that might be of interest/entertaining, to brighten up the next newsletter, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

Btw, I'm trying to make the text bigger....not sure if it's worked or not, bloomin' Mailchimp! So apologies if too small or too large.....feedback welcome.

Stay safe and stay well

Cathy x
