Newsletter 120

AOAC Newsletter

A few important updates.

The first is that we will are resuming activities as of Monday 13th July! While things aren’t going back to normal it is an exciting step forward! Please see this forum thread for more details https://aoac.co.uk/content/restarting-activities.

Or read below:
As stated before, this is not a return to normal and activities will look different. Firstly, to remain within the current government regulations activities will be limited to a maximum of 6 people.

To manage this fairly we are introducing a booking system for all events. This is also important for providing a list of participants quickly for NHS Test and Trace. The only manageable way to do this is to therefore have a charge of £0.25 for all events where there are no additional costs.

For the time being all events will be local day events. Multi-day events are not possible with the current government regulations.
All events will now require a Covid-19 risk assessment to be produced. This can be based on tour Covid-19 template, which can be found here along with all the other risk assessments that we hold https://aoac.co.uk/risk-assessments. This will need to be shared with participants before an event and sent to the Development Officer.

If you plan to participate, organise or lead an activity, please take time  to read the ‘Covid-19 SOP for participants, organisers and leaders’ https://aoac.co.uk/sites/default/files/AOAC_documents/RAs/Covid-19%20SOP%20for%20participants%20organisers%20and%20leaders.docx  This information will also be available in the risk assessment area of the website and will be updated as government regulations change.

If you would like to organise an activity please submit this through the website under the Propose an Event section. Events can be submitted from the 13th July.  Unfortunately we are not organising events through the forum at the moment.

The club is unable to hire out kit at the moment as we have been unable to do a 6 month safety check and we are still working on procedures to hire items as safely as possible. When this changes we will review the situation and update you.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our Sennen bank holiday booking as we had to make a financial commitment which we felt was too big a risk as it would require a change in the regulations.

Please note that while the Club aims to minimise the risk of catching Covid-19 we cannot guarantee that you will not catch Covid-19 while on an activity.

Summary of key points…

  • We can restart activities… but in slightly different format
  • Max 6 people per event
  • £0.25 charge to enable booking a place on events
  • Local day events only
  • Your details must be up to date on website
  • You agree to these being shared for the purpose of NHS Test and Trace if required
  • Updated risk assessments and briefings sent to you before event
  • No Forum events at present

A reminder that the Online meeting is tomorrow evening (9th July). Details, including a zoom link are on the club calendar.

We are very much looking forward to approving events instead of cancelling them!

The second is that we have moved our AGM online.

We have had a few issues with emails going to junk boxes. If you didn’t receive an email from AOAC on the 1st or 8th July, please can you check your junk box and mark them as safe. If you can’t find them, please email for another copy. If you wanted to stand for a committee post but didn’t receive the information or have questions but missed the Q&A session, again please send an email.

In other news membership continues to be extended and we will be restarting new members nights on zoom. We also hope to be able to hold some events specifically for new members. More details to follow!

We have had a few issues with emails going to junk mail. If you did not receive emails on 1st, 8th or 11th July please can you check your junk folder and mark them as safe. This way you should receive them in future.

Patagonia Zoom Talk - 7.30pm Friday 17 July 2020
Back by popular demand... for those who missed out the first time, or would just like to see the amazing photos again, Graham is presenting his talk on trekking & adventures in Patagonia (and the Alps if time permits!) again this week.
He is going to talk about two of his adventures from 2017: a solo trip to Patagonia and (if time) the Walker's Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt which he did with fellow AOAC member Andy.
In Patagonia he trekked in both Chile (Torres del Paine) and Argentina (around Monte Fitz Roy and near Bariloche). Expect to see mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and waterfalls*!
(* waterfalls not actually in Patagonia but not to be missed if visiting Argentina)

The talk is at 7.30pm Friday 17 July. If you missed this talk in May, now's your chance! We are limiting numbers to 20. Details and how to join are on the AOAC Calendar.
Hope to see you on Friday.

Quiz Night - Tuesday 23 June 2020
Thanks Jon and Shim for organising another fun evening. Great rounds!

if anyone else fancies doing an online quiz please feel free; there are lots of us who will join you.

Sennen 2020
Sadly, we have had to cancel our Sennen bank holiday booking as we had to make a financial commitment which we felt was too big a risk; it would require a change in the current regulations and this cannot be guaranteed. Thanks to Andy for his efforts....fingers crossed for next year.

Mountain biking snippets
Bikepacking:  getting all of your kit onto a mountain bike to go out and ride for several days, whilst still being able to use the suspension to enjoy the cross country and downhills!
A few of us in AOAC have got into bikepacking with our mountain bikes in the last few years. It has given us the freedom to get out into some really remote places including, Wales, Scotland & Colorado, exploring unknown bridleways & feel the joy of living incredibly simply.  It’s often challenging, but we feel that the effort of lugging your bike through waist high tussocks, wheel deep puddles or having to find a bothy to dry sodden kit is more than compensated by the amazing views, stunning trails & feeling of being able to access really out of the way places.  One of the things we’ve learnt is to focus on what not to take, nothing goes into the bag that doesn’t have an essential purpose (this  differs for different people!)… no ‘this could be useful’ items!  Alpkit has been a great source of kit, although there are a lot more options on the market now.  We have a basic  bike bag and bivi set for AOAC ers to hire, so as Covid eases we will be looking to get out in the wilds again. The groups will always be small (probably max of 4), but we can cater for any level of experience & are always looking for people keen to share this special way of enjoying your mountain biking, so if you’d like to have a go, or have ideas for trips & want to find people to go out with, get in touch & we can share stories, hints and tips and plans for future rides. Alternatively, you can enjoy the activity vicariously on bikepacking.com

I would say that the next newsletter will be more exciting but I’m not sure that anything can beat the news that activities are restarting.

Hopefully see you on an event soon!
If you have any interesting news/funny stories/free videos/tales of your favourite trips/tips that may help club members, in fact, anything that might be of interest/entertaining, to brighten up the next newsletter, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you sometime  :)

Stay safe and stay well
