A few requests/comments from the Committee (you can tell we've recently had a meeting!):

Welfare Officer
We are looking for a Welfare Officer!  This isn’t a committee post so you wouldn’t be expected to attend committee meetings but you would help to ensure that the club keeps up to date with best practice and does not discriminate against vulnerable adults and members with disabilities.  This is an opportunity to give back to the club as well as the chance to make a positive difference for some of our more vulnerable members.

If you are interested or have any queries please email [email protected]

Request for photos

We are keen to get some new and fresh photos for the website that cover all the activities we do.  We have some amazing shots from various trips shared to the club Facebook page but we can’t use these directly as the quality is lost.  Please send your best shots to [email protected] to help liven up our website. Thank you.

Web Development

Are there any members out there who have web development experience? Matt and Irene are doing a fab job on maintaining and updating the website but additional support would be brilliant. Please contact Irene at [email protected]  if you would like to help. There are some personal development opportunities within this as once you've leaned Drupal (if you don't know it already) you will have an extra skill to add to your CV and get lots of work from.

Organising an Event - Approved Leaders

We wanted to remind you that if you organise an event you will need club-approved leaders for your official club activities. Leaders can be found under 'Arrange Events' on the 'Current Members and Activity Leaders' tab. You can easily contact the leaders of the relevant activities using the 'Forum' tab and 'Email Activity Leaders' tab.

You don't need to be a leader yourself to organise any events but before you propose an event it would be good to have your leaders lined up and ready to go. Once the event is approved you can then release the first places to your leaders so you are covered, then release the rest after that.

When you sign off your event (after it has taken place), please ensure you only add approved leaders to your sign-off. Any activity taking place with a non-approved leader is a peer activity and is not covered by the club insurance

Forum Events

If you organise an event through the club forum, please go back to the thread after the event and add the participants. We need to know who attended each event for insurance purposes.....boring I know, but important. It won't take you too long, so please do it :)

AGM
The AGM will be held in March...full details to follow and don't forget there's a free drink for all who attend! 🍷🍸🍺🥃

All roles are up for grabs so if you're interested in joining the committee get yourself proposed and seconded by email to the secretary at [email protected] . Some of the current committee are planning to stand for roles again but it would be great to have more than one person stand for each post :)  Wendy will not be standing again as Activities Officer so that is one role which we will definitely need to fill. Wendy has done a grand job, so many thanks Wendy, you'll be missed from the Committee. If you would like more details on any of the roles please contact the Chair or the current officer (https://aoac.co.uk/content/contacts). There will be plenty of support when taking on new roles.

Members can propose resolutions for discussion at the AGM. Please remember that any resolution should be proposed and seconded by other members.

New on the Calendar:

Upstairs at Inn on the Green - 7.30pm

It's time to look ahead to longer and (hopefully) warmer days...at the summer Paddlesports planning meeting we will be sorting out dates for April to September for all things paddling related. This will include coaching for beginners upwards, sea kayaking, touring, white water as well as SUP and surfing events. Please come along, have your say on what you'd like to see on the calendar this summer, and hopefully offer to help organise some of this exciting stuff :) All help would be very welcome

Bavarian Alps Planning Meeting - 17 February 2020

This meeting is for those who are interested in the Bavarian Alps trip. The aim being to start arranging lift shares, see if people want to do 1 or 2 weeks and share activity plans.  Please let Sarah know if you can make the meeting or if you are interested in the trip.

You can find details of the trip here https://aoac.co.uk/content/bavarian-alps-multi-activity-planning-meeting

River Dart Loop & Lower Paddle - Kayaks & Open Boats - Saturday 22 February 2020
We have coaches and leaders to take you down the Loop and Lower, either in a kayak or a canoe. You will need to be at least Explore level, with some whitewater experience in your chosen boat.  Also having completed a safety and rescue course eg the Club's MWSS or similar. As we are approaching the end of the whitewater season it would be great to get as many as possible along.

Kayaks and kit can be hired via the 'Equipment Hire' page if necessary.

Equipment Inventory Check - 28 March 2020
Come and spend a sociable morning helping to check all our equipment. The more the merrier and the quicker the job will get done. There may be cake!

Remember the equipment is there for all members to use.

Wednesday Evening Road Rides - Starting 29 April 2020
Road rides with a distance of between 20 and 25 miles depending on group, speed of around 12mph; these are fun social rides with a pub stop at the end.

These rides will start at various venues around Bristol, with the start points and routes to be announced nearer the time; keep your eye on the calendar. If not notified of an alternative, they will start at The Ashton pub car park, Long Ashton BS41 9LX .

Bank Holiday Camping/Campervanning in Pembrokeshire - 22-25 May 2020
The Late May Bank Holiday Multi-activity weekend trip to Pembrokeshire will again be at Porthclais Farm Campsite, St Davids, SA62 6RR.

Sign up quickly for another fun-packed Bank Holiday weekend in sunny South West Wales.  Depending on the availability of leaders, activities will include walking, kayaking, climbing, cycling and lazing on the beach.  Some of these activities will require a certain level of experience and you will need to bring your own equipment or hire it (see the website for more information on AOAC kit hire).  Activities such as sea kayaking will be organised but these will need to be signed-up to separately. If anyone is interested in horse riding (we had a fab ride there a few years ago) you can always organise a private event.

In the evening you can walk the one mile in to St David's where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs, or walk to the cliff and sit and watch the sun go down. On the Saturday evening there may be a chilli being cooked al fresco in the campsite. Contact Matt if you are interested in joining in. The cost per person will be no more than £5 each.

The cost of camping for the weekend will be £23 per person.

If you are planning to stay in a CAMPERVAN the camp site will charge £18 per night (which includes two adults) Please see the separate website entry for campervans and book directly with Thelma at the site. We have our own area in the adjacent field.

Trips in next couple of months:

North Wales Multi-Activity Weekend - 13-15 March 2020

North Wales - Cefn Brith (near Bala) is a great location for many activities.  We have leaders for Mountain biking and paddling.  If you would like to lead an activity please let  the organiser know.

Mountain Biking: Shaun will be leading a more advanced group one day with some distance, cross country.Pete M. will also lead some MTBing.

Kayaking: There are many great rivers nearby. This trip is suitable for all levels, although the minimum is 2 star standard (you don't actually need the qualification) with some safety training (eg. the club's MWSS or WWSRT).

March New Members Weekend - 20-23 March 2020
Come and join us on the first New Members Weekend of 2020 - a perfect opportunity to meet Club members and get stuck into some lovely outdoor pursuits!

The event is open to all members and is a great way to sample some of the activities that we get up to in the AOAC. All this takes place against the backdrop of the beautiful Exmoor National Park, about a 1 hour and forty minute drive from Bristol.  As well as the outdoor activities, you will enjoy the friendly, sociable atmosphere for which these weekends are famous.

Staying at a bunkhouse within reach of the North Devon coast and on the Southern fringe of Exmoor National Park. Although it is in a rural setting, the North Devon coastline is only 20 minutes away. Water babies might want to pack a wetsuit, just in case.

There are two options available, walking and mountain biking.

There is a climbing wall on site and experienced climbers can register to use the facility after the main activities.

Do You Know?

Risk Assessments
If you lead an event please make sure you are familiar with the relevant risk assessments, as well as carrying out dynamic risk assessments on the day. We have generic risk assessments for all activities as well as some site specific ones for regularly visited locations. Just go to 'Club Operation' on the members tab, then   'Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures'. You don't need to print these or participant lists for the day.

If you have an event you particularly want me to advertise or you have any interesting news you'd like to share, a story to tell about an event you've participated in, or any more tips that may help club members, please let me know at [email protected] . Thank you.

See you soon
Cathy x

---------------------------------------------------------------

For activities that are weather dependent, there are often ad hoc events posted on the forum close to the day. It is worth subscribing to these as you will receive an email with the content of the message and a link to the page. Then you won't miss out on that last minute walk/climb/paddle/ride. Also, we have a Facebook page, a Twitter account (@aoacbristol) and an Instagram account (aoacbristol). If you haven't already, join the Facebook group where you will find postings of ad hoc events and photos of past events and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

If you want to know more about how the club works and how the committee makes decisions then please do look at the minutes

If you have any issues with the website or email please report these using the direct link in the members section or here: https://tinyurl.com/AOAC- web-issues
