Happy New Year!

Hope you've all had a lovely festive season; looks like those of us who celebrated the New Year up in Yorkshire had a fabulous time 😊

Well, what a year we have ahead of us. So many events, trips, socials.... we are truly blessed! Have a look at the calendar and see what floats your boat, and remember to book on quickly as some events sell out fast.

STOP PRESS

SKI TRIP 2020
There has been a cancellation due to injury on the Les Arcs Intermediate/Advance Ski and Board Trip 2020 leaving Bristol on Saturday 29 February and returning on Saturday 7 March. This is for a female only unless any of the female participants is very kind and agrees to share with a male. Please contact the organisers Vince and Susanne at [email protected] if you are interested.

Spread along the edge of a beautiful forest in the Tarentaise Valley, Les Arcs 1800 is the biggest and liveliest of the Les Arcs villages and benefits from sunshine and picturesque views.   Access to the ski area is very easy, with a choice of altitude skiing in the Arc 2000 bowl or long, tree lined red and blue runs down to Peisey Nancroix, or, in the other direction, to Arc 1600 and Arc 1950. There is plenty to look forward to, with Mont Blanc and Foret two of the most popular regions and the Aiguille Rouge provides a 2,000m vertical drop with some magnificent views.

The hotel is based right at the foot of the nursery slopes and offers ski-in/ski-out convenience. A jazz bar and attractive, spacious lounge with log fire and live music most evenings.

For relaxing after a hard day on the slopes there is a spa with small relaxation pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam room (may be at additional cost).

The cost of £1286 includes fights, transfers, full all area lift pass, accommodation, evening meals for 7 nights (including free wine), and buffet breakfasts.  Ski or board hire or ski carriage is additional cost however a discount has been secured.

Hurry, this will be a fabulous trip, book on now!

Climbing
Just to remind you that there generally 2 indoor climbing sessions per week now - Tuesdays at Redpoint, Ashton and Thursdays at TCA - The Church, St Werburgh's. Beginners are welcome and informal coaching can be given, but check with the organiser first to see if there are appropriate numbers to ensure safety. Sign up to the forum for news of ad hoc events (see below).

Walking, Cycling, Kayaking
Keep your eye on the calendar for day events. There are some on the calendar already but others pop up at short notice. It's a good idea to sign up to the appropriate forums to be kept up to date, or keep your eye on our Facebook group.

Outdoor First Aid Course (16 hour) - 1-2 February 2020
There are still some spaces available on this course. Many of you have taken this course previously but your qualification is now out of date. Sign up now. You could save a life!

Club leaders can get 100% subsidy upon completion of the course, 50% subsidy for non-leaders. This means the course is free for leaders and costs a mere £70 for other members, you won't get a course cheaper anywhere!  Please apply for your subsidy before you attend the course.

The course will be run by the excellent M-Training, and is very practical with realistic role play to reinforce the theory. The agenda is designed to meet the needs of all the club's regular activities, as well as the requirements of national governing bodies such as BCU.

South Wales Mountain Biking and Kayaking trip - 7-9 February 2020
Still some places available. A bargain £34 for 2 nights in a bunk house, paddling for minimum 2* standard (you don't need to have the qualification) and mountain biking for all levels.

Staying at the Tyle Morgrug cottage and bunkhouse

Cynon Valley Cottage and Bunkhouse, Tyle Morgrug, Halt Road, Rhigos, Aberdare, CF44 9UW

http://www.cyat.org/

This is a great base for outdoor activities. Opening up to road biking and paddling but can open to more activities if we have leaders.

March New Members Weekend - 20-23 March 2020
Come and join us on the first New Members Weekend of 2020 - a perfect opportunity to meet Club members and get stuck into some lovely outdoor pursuits!

The event is open to all members and is a great way to sample some of the activities that we get up to in the AOAC. All this takes place against the backdrop of the beautiful Exmoor National Park, about a 1 hour and forty minute drive from Bristol.  As well as the outdoor activities, you will enjoy the friendly, sociable atmosphere for which these weekends are famous.

Staying at a bunkhouse within reach of the North Devon coast and on the Southern fringe of Exmoor National Park. Although it is in a rural setting, the North Devon coastline is only 20 minutes away. Water babies might want to pack a wetsuit, just in case.

There are two options available, walking and mountain biking.

There is a climbing wall on site and experienced climbers can register to use the facility after the main activities.

Sailing the Idyllic Turquoise Coast - 5-12 September 2020
After two fabulous sailing trips to the Greek islands this year, in 2020 we’re heading off to Turkey on a sailing adventure exploring the beautiful Turquoise Coast, renowned as one of the most spectacular sailing spots in Europe.

Remarkably underdeveloped, the area is notable for its fine beaches, stunning scenery and an abundance of islands, offering a wonderfully diverse Mediterranean paradise. Unspoilt coves and inlets with clear turquoise water, idyllic harbours and a fantastic tapestry of culture and history are just waiting to be explored.

Many of the most attractive bays and islands are still inaccessible to vehicular traffic, which will ensure a truly unique sailing holiday experience. We won’t go hungry though as a number of Turkish restaurants can be found tucked away in many of the scenic bays, offering typical Turkish cuisine served as it would have been centuries ago. Throw in a bit of adventure, loggerhead turtles, cheap shopping, not forgetting the friendly welcoming locals and wonderful Mediterranean climate, we won't want to leave!

Crewing the yachts ourselves, there will be plenty of opportunity to improve your sailing skills or indeed learn new sailing skills for the first time and also to swim and snorkel in turquoise waters and to explore all that this beautiful region and its coastline has to offer.

We’ve managed to secure three larger and very beautiful sailing yachts each to allow for a more comfortable sailing experience. These will not be at full capacity so there will be plenty of space!

Some evenings we will moor in picturesque fishing harbours and ports and have dinner ashore, whilst others we may eat on board whilst at anchor in an idyllic bay ...... everyone is expected to muck into the chores of the boat in some way whether it’s crewing the yachts, cooking, or making the G&Ts!

This is a great opportunity to learn some new skills or improve on your sailing skills. No experience is necessary so complete novices are very welcome as well as experienced sailors.

So if you've always fancied sailing but not had the opportunity book on now, it's a bargain at £441 (plus flights and sundry costs).
